How to enjoy your life more

What’s the key to enjoying life? What are simple and effective ways to enjoy your life more? And can you learn how to make life fulfilling and joyful?

Well, that’s what I’m talking about in this episode; I’ll teach you how to create a better life for yourself and I’ll be sharing practical tips for more happiness in your life.

Ready to start enjoying everyday life more? Then, let’s talk!

Hello and welcome back to the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast, the independent show full of simple ideas for better mental health, and thanks for joining me!

If you’re new here, then hi! I’m Jeremy Godwin, podcast creator and writer, and this isn’t the type of show full of interviews or random opinions; I’m also a mental health counsellor, and so each week I teach you practical and effective ways to improve your mental wellbeing, based on quality research as well as my own experience of learning to live with anxiety and depression after a breakdown in 2011 that changed my life.

This is Episode 251 and today I’ll be talking about what enjoying your life more means, why it matters, and how to do it.

So, let’s talk!

*********

In late 1983, Cyndi Lauper declared that “girls just want to have fun” — and while I obviously can’t speak for girls, since I’m not one, I can say that the desire to have fun is actually pretty universal; I mean, even my cat Igor would choose playing and having fun over most things in life (with the exception of food, because that’s his favourite thing in the world and he’s my chunky bear… but that’s a conversation for another day!).

Let me ask you this: do you ever feel like your life’s passing by in a bit of a blur, and you’re not really able to fully savour the moments that matter? All too often we get caught up in the ‘busyness’ of daily life — work, commitments, the never-ending to-do list — and before we know it, the days, weeks, and even months have flown by.

But what if you could change that by making a few simple adjustments to your mindset and habits? What if you could find more joy and contentment in your everyday experiences, no matter what life throws your way?

In this episode, I’m going to talk about how to enjoy your life more, and why it’s important to be proactive about it. Enjoying life isn’t about waiting for the ‘perfect’ moment or reaching some monumental achievement; it’s about finding pleasure in the present and creating a life that feels fulfilling on a day-to-day basis. Together we’ll explore practical tips for bringing more joy into your life and discuss how focusing on what makes you happy can have an enormously powerful effect on your mental health and wellbeing.

(By the way, sorry if I sound a bit husky today, I’m still slowly recovering from bronchitis… so bear with me and my croaky voice!).

So, let’s take a moment to go through some definitions and let’s talk about…

What does ‘enjoying your life more’ mean?

And, really, it means exactly what it says on the tin: learning how to enjoy your life more, so you can feel more positive and fulfilled.

When I talk about the idea of enjoying life more, it’s really about focusing on the things that bring a sense of satisfaction, happiness, and contentment into your everyday experience. Enjoyment isn’t necessarily about having the most exciting life in the world or achieving major milestones non-stop; it’s simply about cultivating moments of peace, joy, and fulfilment in the present. That doesn’t mean your life has to be perfect, or that it’s going to be without its challenges; in fact, it’s often about consciously finding those sparks of joy even in the middle of the messiness. Enjoying life more is about becoming more mindful of the things that make life feel richer to you and then actively leaning into those experiences, regardless of what might be going on around you.

On a practical level, enjoying your life more means creating opportunities to do things that align with your values and make you feel connected, engaged, and at peace. For example, that could involve prioritising time with your loved ones or setting aside time for hobbies you absolutely love and enjoy, even when life feels busy. Maybe it’s about slowing down to appreciate simple pleasures, like a morning coffee in the sunshine or a quiet evening walk. Or perhaps it involves setting boundaries so that you’re not constantly overwhelmed with commitments that don’t really matter to you. It could also mean learning to let go of the pressure to achieve more, and instead allowing yourself to experience contentment in the present. When you actively make choices that bring you joy and balance, you’re fostering a life that feels more enjoyable on a daily basis.

Now, in a mental health context, working on enjoying your life more can have a profound impact on how you feel about yourself and the world around you. When you make a conscious effort to engage with things that bring you happiness or peace, you’re contributing positively to your emotional wellbeing. It’s not just about having fun or doing things that make you smile; it’s about creating a sense of emotional stability and resilience. By focusing on what brings you genuine enjoyment, you can counteract feelings of stress, anxiety, or even sadness. This is not about escaping from reality — far from it — but rather it’s about creating moments that recharge you and that help you cope more effectively with the inevitable challenges life throws our way.

So, with that in mind, now let’s talk about…

Why is ‘enjoying your life more’ important?

And it’s important because it places you in the driver’s seat of your own happiness; you’re responsible for your own life, and so when you proactively focus on finding practical and tangible ways to enjoy your life more, you’re able to steer your life in a positive direction.

Look, I think we all know just how easy it is to get caught up in the busyness of everyday life and then to forget to prioritise the things that truly bring you joy. When you’re proactively focused on this stuff, you make a conscious decision to seek out and create moments of happiness and fulfilment for yourself rather than waiting for them to happen by chance or hoping someone else will do it for you. This means actively identifying what brings you joy, carving out time for those activities or experiences, and then also setting boundaries that protect your mental and emotional wellbeing (and I just explained how to do that in Episode 248). By being proactive, you’re not just reacting to life as it happens; you’re taking ownership of your experience and shaping a life that feels more satisfying. You’re living your life, rather than just observing it.

In general terms, being proactive about enjoying your life more allows you to live with greater intention. When you make a habit of seeking out joy and contentment, you’re going to be less likely to feel overwhelmed by the stresses of daily life. You’re creating a foundation of positivity and balance that can help you navigate challenges more effectively. This proactive approach also leads to personal growth, because it requires you to reflect on what truly matters to you and then to make decisions aligned with your values. It’s not about chasing constant happiness (which isn’t realistic) but about fostering moments of fulfilment that enhance your overall quality of life and help you to find a greater sense of satisfaction with your life (while, at the same time, working to continuously grow and evolve).

In a mental health context, being proactive about enjoying your life more can have a significant impact on how you manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. When you make enjoyment a priority, you’re giving yourself permission to step away from the things that drain you and to focus instead on what replenishes your energy, which can help reduce feelings of burnout and emotional exhaustion. Taking an active role in creating moments of joy and peace in your life can also help build resilience, making it easier to cope with difficult situations if and when they arise. Proactively focusing on enjoyment helps shift your mindset from one of surviving to one of thriving, and that’s a crucial shift to make for maintaining your emotional and mental wellbeing.

When you actively seek out the things that bring you happiness, you’re more likely to feel content and at peace… and this sense of fulfilment can make a huge difference in how you experience your day-to-day life. It’s also a powerful way to combat negative emotions like stress or anxiety, because it allows you to create a buffer of positivity that can help you handle challenges with more ease.

Another major benefit is that it strengthens your relationships. When you prioritise activities that bring you joy, you’re more likely to feel present and engaged with the people around you. Whether it’s spending quality time with loved ones or simply being in a better frame of mind, your relationships will most definitely benefit from your proactive efforts to enjoy life more.

Finally, proactively focusing on enjoyment can also improve your physical health; when your mental health is in a good place, your body often follows suit, and reduced stress levels lead to better sleep, improved immune function, and a greater sense of overall wellbeing. So, by making time for the things that bring you joy you’re not only nurturing your mind but also taking care of your body.

So, in short, being proactive about enjoying your life more is a powerful way to improve your overall quality of life. By making the choice to prioritise joy, you’re setting yourself up for a much more balanced and fulfilling life.

So, how do you do all of that? Well, let’s first take a quick break to hear from the brands who help me create this show each week…

And welcome back! Now let’s get into the how-to part of today’s episode and let’s talk about…

How to really enjoy your life

OK, first, start your day intentionally — how you begin your day sets the tone for everything that follows, so starting your day with intention helps put you in a proactive mindset by giving you control over how you want to feel and what you want to focus on. Incorporate a simple morning routine that includes things like journaling, meditation, or simply setting an intention for how you want to approach the day. When you start your day on a positive note, you’re more likely to enjoy it, no matter what comes your way. Next…

Prioritise time for yourself — to enjoy life more, it’s important to make time for yourself… even when things feel hectic. This allows you to recharge and reconnect with what truly matters to you, rather than just being caught up in the daily grind. Set aside dedicated “me time” each week for activities you love, whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, or simply relaxing, and make room for fun; it doesn’t have to be anything complicated or out of your comfort zone, and you don’t have to go clubbing (for example) if that’s not your thing. Actually, on that note, I read an article recently about a couple of entrepreneurs here in Australia who do an afternoon disco thing for women in different cities, and it’s really popular especially with people in their 40s and 50s, and I can completely understand why… I mean, I don’t know about you, but the last time I was out anywhere past 9pm Britney Spears was still releasing new music, so it’s definitely been a while! Anyway, what was my point?! Ah, yes, make time for yourself and make it a priority; the key is to honour that time, making it a non-negotiable part of your schedule. OK, next…

Be present — enjoying life isn’t just about what you do… it’s about how you experience it. Being present helps you fully engage with whatever you’re doing, whether that’s having a meal, spending time with loved ones, or enjoying nature, and it brings your focus back to the here and now, reducing feelings of stress and worry about the future. Make time daily to slow down, take deep breaths, and consciously notice the sights, sounds, and sensations around you. Next…

Cultivate gratitude — focusing on what you’re grateful for can shift your mindset from what’s lacking in your life to what’s already good… plus it reframes your perspective, allowing you to appreciate the positives more. You can do this in just a minute or two a day by reflecting and writing down a few things you feel grateful for (I have a digital tool to help you get the most out of a quick bit of daily reflection to improve your mental health; head to my website at ltamh.com and then choose ‘Store’ from the menu). Daily gratitude practice is a simple but effective way to remind yourself of all the good in your life, no matter how small. OK, next…

Focus on what you can control — it’s easy to get caught up in worrying about things outside your control, but focusing on what you can control helps you feel more empowered and it reduces unnecessary stress. This shifts your energy towards actions that can actually make a difference in your life (instead of getting bogged down by problems). Identify areas of your life where you can take action, such as how you spend your time or how you respond to challenges, and let go of what’s beyond your control. Next…

Simplify your life — look… sometimes, less is more. Simplifying your life by decluttering your space, saying no to unnecessary commitments, and focusing on what truly matters can help you feel more at ease. It reduces overwhelm and it creates more room for the things that bring you joy. Regularly assess what’s adding value to your life and let go of what isn’t. It’s a gradual process, but it’s one that can lead to a more enjoyable and peaceful life. Next…

Try new experiences — stepping out of your comfort zone and trying new things can bring excitement and a sense of adventure into your life, because it breaks up the routine and adds novelty (which keeps life interesting!). You don’t have to do anything extreme; start small, like maybe trying a new recipe, exploring a new walking trail, or learning a new skill. It’s about embracing variety and giving yourself permission to explore. OK, next…

Spend time with people who lift you up — your relationships play a huge role in how much you enjoy your life; surrounding yourself with positive and supportive people can boost your mood and make life more enjoyable, because positive connections foster a sense of belonging and happiness. Prioritise time with friends and family who make you feel good, and gently distance yourself from relationships that drain your energy or bring negativity. Next…

Say “no” — one of the keys to enjoying life more is creating space for the things that truly matter to you, and that often starts with saying “no” to things that don’t. This helps because it allows you to protect your time and energy, ensuring that you’re not overcommitted to tasks or obligations that drain you. Set clear boundaries with others, and be honest about what you can and can’t take on. Remember, saying “no” isn’t selfish — it’s necessary for your wellbeing and happiness. OK, next…

Spend time in nature — getting outside and connecting with nature is a simple yet powerful way to boost your enjoyment of life, because nature has a calming effect on the mind and body (which helps reduce stress and promote a sense of peace). Take regular walks in the park, spend time by the water, or even just sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. Next…

Laugh more (on purpose!) — we all know that laughter makes us feel good, but sometimes we wait for something funny to happen rather than actively seeking it out. Making time to laugh intentionally helps release feel-good chemicals in your brain, reducing stress and lifting your mood. Try watching a comedy show, sharing funny videos with friends, or even try out laughter yoga (yes, it’s a thing… Google it!). The point is to bring more joy into your day, even if it’s just with a few moments of laughter. OK, next…

Have a “no plan” day — life can often feel overly structured, with endless to-do lists and responsibilities. Having a “no plan” day helps you break free from that, letting you do whatever feels right in the moment. It gives you space to relax, be spontaneous, and simply enjoy the day as it unfolds. Do this by picking a day where you have no obligations and let yourself wander — whether it’s exploring a new area or just lounging at home. Just remember: the key here is no expectations and no pressure. Next…

Sing like no one’s listening — singing out loud, whether it’s in the shower or your car, is a great way to release stress and boost your mood, because it engages your brain, releases endorphins, and allows you to express yourself freely. My current go-to is to just randomly sing that bit from Whenever, Wherever by Shakira where she goes, “le-do-lo-le-lo-le” — I keep on randomly singing it both whenever and wherever, and I’m OK with it (although I did have to stop myself the other day, because I almost sang it out loud in the supermarket!). Anyway, the point is that music has a profound effect on our emotions and singing can really lift your spirits… so why not belt out your favourite songs whenever you feel the need for a pick-me-up. It doesn’t matter if you’re off-key — what matters is that you’re having fun and letting go. You could also put together a playlist of songs that bring you joy, and play it whenever you need an extra boost throughout the day. OK, next…

Dance it out — similar to singing, dancing can be a brilliant way to enjoy life more by simply letting loose, because physical movement releases tension and energises you. You can do this by putting on your favourite upbeat music and bopping around your living room, even if it’s just for five minutes. It’s not about being a good dancer; it’s about feeling the joy of movement and letting your body express that. It’s an instant mood-lifter! Next…

Do something kind for a stranger — acts of kindness don’t just benefit others; they also boost your own sense of happiness and remind you of the impact you can have, no matter how small. Try buying a coffee for the person behind you in line, offering a compliment to a stranger, or donating to a charity. These little gestures can add up, bringing more warmth and positivity into your life. Next…

Take yourself on a “mini adventure” — exploration isn’t just for holidays; you can inject a bit of adventure into your everyday life, which encourages curiosity and excitement, even in familiar surroundings. Visit a new café, explore a neighbourhood you’ve never been to, or take a different route on your daily walk. Or try an activity like having a “no complaints” day (where you actively reframe challenges or simply let things go for the entire day). These mini adventures break up your routine and help you see the world through fresh eyes. Next…

Celebrate your wins (no matter how small) — life isn’t just about the big milestones; it’s about the small victories along the way (which just so happen to add up over time to become big wins!). Celebrating your small wins helps you stay motivated and enjoy the journey more, shifting your focus from the end goal to the progress you’re making (which helps you be more positive and feel a sense of accomplishment). You can do this by acknowledging your efforts, no matter how small, and taking time to reflect on how far you’ve come. It’s about recognising that all progress is still progress!

Summary and Close-out

Because when it comes to enjoying your life more and your mental health, what it all boils down to is this:

Enjoying your life more is about being intentional and proactive in creating the kind of experiences that bring you happiness, peace, and fulfilment. It’s not about waiting for life to hand you joy on a silver platter; it’s about taking small, meaningful actions to cultivate it each day. When you make a conscious choice to focus on the things that truly matter to you, you’re setting yourself up for a richer and more satisfying life. So, start today. Whether it’s carving out time for yourself, trying something new, or simply focusing on gratitude, you’re the one in control of how much joy you bring into your life. Take those steps, no matter how small, and watch as they begin to transform how you experience the world around you.

The choice is yours, as it is with all things related to your wellbeing… so, what choice will YOU make today?

Each week I like to finish up by sharing a quote about the week’s topic, and I encourage you to take a few moments to really reflect on it and consider what it means to you. This week’s quote is by Ferris Bueller (from the classic 80s movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off), and it is:

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”
