It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃
The way you feel is your choice.
I had someone jump on me recently in my Instagram DMs because I said something similar, and they thought I was saying to just stop feeling a type of way.
Which, of course, I wasn’t. I mean, have you ever tried just shutting off your feelings? I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t work for me!
My response to this person was that basically their interpretation is the polar opposite of what I say; you need to feel your feelings, just not be owned by them.
To do that, you need to put some effort in (pause, breathe, label the feeling, figure out why you’re feeling it). Once you do that, it becomes easier to be more objective about whatever you’re feeling and you can incorporate logical and rational thought into the situation before you decide how to respond.
Yes it’s hard to let go of your feelings, or to drag your focus back to the positive… but ‘hard’ doesn’t mean ‘impossible’.
Pause, breathe, label what you’re feeling, then identify why you feel that way… and then decide on how to make a rational choice about what to do next. With time, effort and perseverance this becomes easier (and when you drop the ball on this, which you will, forgive yourself and learn the lesson so you can move forward).
So here is one simple, actionable tip for you to try this week: Any time you feel hijacked by your emotions, practice the pause > breathe > label > identify why process before you even attempt to figure out what to do next. And leave me a comment to let me know what you did and how it felt!
Until our next talk, have a fantastic week!
