The Power of Planning Ahead (Thursday Thoughts: 1 June, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

I wasn’t planning to talk to you about planning.

It was going to be some sort of existential discussion of the power of your mindset, but lately I’ve been having so many conversations about planning with other people (and with myself!) that I felt it was a conversation I needed to share here.

If you’re a regular reader then you’ll remember that back in April I had COVID, and the thing that I’ve been most proud of is that I haven’t missed a beat in terms of my weekly content creation (podcast, video, socials) because I work roughly two weeks in advance for that stuff and I take a minute or two every day to plan my work.

Planning doesn’t have to be complicated. I use a post-it note every morning to write down the 3-5 things I need to achieve that day, and then I tick them off one by one as I go… and at the end of the day I get to scrunch up that bit of paper and throw it away, which feels cathartic in some way.

The problem for many of us is that we either overcomplicate our to-do lists, which feels overwhelming, or we try to just juggle it all in our heads, which puts too much pressure on our minds to do the heavy lifting and can lead to stress and anxiety. When you write it out you get it out of your head, and for the sake of a couple of minutes a day it makes a huge difference to have a broad picture of where your focus is going to go for the day.

The point of the story is this: a little planning goes a long, long way!

So my question for you this week is: how can you incorporate a simple planning routine into your day? Let me know in the comments!

Now, without any further ado… greetings and salutations, and a very warm welcome to another newsletter. I hope you enjoy my quick snapshot of my favourite things this week — hopefully at least one of them will make you smile/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 🙂

💯 My absolute favourite thing this week:

Some people find the unpleasant safe and familiar, and it’s not up to you to make them change (not that you can anyway). They need to want to change. It’s a bitter pill to swallow, I know.
