LTAMH Weekly: Is everyone getting meaner? (Episode 358)

Nastiness has a way of hanging around long after the person who was nasty has forgotten you even exist. So why do you end up carrying it, and what would it take to finally put it down? Episode 358 of Let’s Talk About Mental Health explores why other people’s nastiness lingers and how to stop it from ruining your day. It’s out now; read on for an understanding of why I’m covering this topic now, along with a reminder about protecting your peace during chaotic times (AKA most days these days). So, let’s talk!

Episode 358: Why other people’s nastiness gets under your skin

I try to keep a healthy distance from nastiness these days. I barely go on social media (when I do, it’s just to answer your messages on Instagram @ltamentalhealth, and then I’m out of there faster than you can blink), and yet it still manages to find me somehow.

Recently I sat through a detailed airline announcement reminding grown adults to treat the crew and each other with respect, on both legs of the flight. Then, in a moment of weakness at a McDonald’s drive-through (look, I’m trying to eat better, OK?), I noticed a sign at the window asking people not to abuse the staff. How angry are people getting about their takeaway? Are the Happy Meals not making people happy anymore?! But when basic decency needs its own signage, dealing with other people’s nastiness stops being an occasional skill and becomes an essential everyday one.

That’s what this week’s episode is about: why nastiness gets to you sometimes and sticks in your head, and how to stop handing it your peace of mind. It’s out now wherever you get your podcasts; click here for transcript and audio/video. And let me know what you think! Non-nasty comments are always welcome. 🙂

Tip of the Week:

And while you’re working through healthy ways to tackle nastiness… here’s a tip from my archives, specifically Episode 315 about protecting your peace in chaotic times:

Your peace is not a luxury item. It’s what lets you function, care, think clearly, and it’s what keeps you moving through your life without being swallowed whole by everything that’s happening out there.

From the episode: “The world being a mess is real… but you don’t have to let that mess live in your head all day. You’re allowed to care about what’s happening and also protect your peace. Because that’s how you stay grounded enough to keep living your life, and showing up in the ways that matter.”

Have a great week! Jeremy 😃
