LTAMH Weekly: Feeling lost in life? Plus tips for tackling procrastination

The way back starts with recognising the small signals that lead you back to yourself. Episode 346 of the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast is about exactly that, and it’s out now. Episode 246: Feeling lost in life? How to find your way again

What do you do if you’re feeling lost in life? When every choice feels impossible and you no longer know how to find yourself? Well, you start by finding your way back to yourself.

This week in the Let’s Talk About Mental Health podcast, I’m exploring why feeling lost is not proof that you’re broken or failing somehow; often, it’s a sign that you’ve drifted away from your preferences, your values, and your sense of direction. If you’re feeling directionless, feeling stuck in life, feeling adrift, or feeling lost and unmotivated, this episode will help you understand what’s happening beneath the fog and what to do when you feel lost. I’ll share practical mental health tips to help you stop trying to solve your whole life at once, so you can get the confusion out of your head and learn how to find your way in life one step at a time.

Finding yourself again after feeling lost doesn’t require some sort of dramatic reinvention; learning how to find yourself again begins with noticing what makes you feel more like you, following the thread of who you have always been, and rebuilding your inner compass through action. Feeling lost in life can feel overwhelming, but you can and will find yourself again one step at a time. It’s time to begin finding meaning in life and to discover how to find direction in life without having the entire map.

👉 Ready to reconnect with yourself and take your next step? Then let’s talk!

💡 TL;DR: Feeling lost in life doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you, or that you’re actually lost. This episode will show you how to find yourself again by rebuilding your inner compass one small step at a time. 🙂

Tip of the Week:

And while we’re talking about getting unstuck: here’s a tip from my archives, specifically Episode 277 about how to stop procrastination… because sometimes the small signals you’re missing aren’t about the direction of your life, sometimes they’re about the thing that’s been sitting on your to-do list for ages. So the simple tip I’m sharing is:

Start approaching procrastination differently.

What is procrastination?

Ever notice how the second something important lands on your plate, you suddenly feel a burning urge to clean the fridge? That’s not laziness. That’s your brain protecting you from discomfort… and it’s worth understanding what’s going on, because once you do that’s when procrastination gets a lot easier to shift.

Why it happens:

Procrastination isn’t a time management problem, it’s an emotion management problem. You’re not avoiding the task, you’re avoiding the feeling that comes with it (such as fear of failing, fear of getting it wrong, or just not knowing where to start). Your brain treats that discomfort like a threat, and so it then steers you toward something that feels safer in the moment. You get short-term relief, sure, but the task doesn’t go anywhere… and neither does the guilt.

What to do about it:

  • Start before you feel ready. Waiting to feel motivated is like waiting for a bus that isn’t coming. Try the “just one thing” rule: commit to doing just one thing for five minutes, no more. Momentum builds from action, not the other way around.
  • Break it down. “Write the report” is overwhelming. “Open a new document” isn’t. Smaller steps feel achievable, and each one you tick off gives you a small hit of progress.
  • Watch your self-talk. “I work better under pressure” and “I’ll do it tomorrow” are stories, not facts. Write them down and ask yourself if they’re actually true, or just familiar.
  • Aim for 80%, not 100%. Perfectionism is one of procrastination’s favourite disguises. ‘Done’ is better than ‘perfect’, every time (and by the way, ‘perfect’ doesn’t actually exist!).
  • Set a real deadline, even if nobody else is expecting one. Structure creates urgency, and urgency is what gets things moving.

The key thing to take away:

Procrastination isn’t a character flaw, it’s a habit… and habits change with awareness and a bit of self-compassion. You don’t need to fix it all at once. You just need to begin.
