Lost in Literature (Thursday Thoughts: 28 September, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

I love reading. For a few years I struggled with it, finding it hard to get into anything, but I’m now back in full swing… so much so that my coffee table looks like a book fair.

Have you ever lost yourself in a story so deeply that, for a moment, you forget your surroundings? The beauty of books isn’t just in their tales, but in their ability to transport us, to offer solace, and sometimes even to provide clarity. So, today, I’d love to chat about an age-old, yet sometimes overlooked, form of therapy: the world of bibliotherapy – healing through books.

We live in a world that’s always on, always buzzing. But books? They’re a gentle invitation to pause, breathe, and journey into another world. Whether it’s reliving your childhood through fantasy, understanding your emotions through poignant memoirs, or seeking solace in poetry, there’s a therapeutic quality in connecting with written words. They offer both an escape and a mirror, reflecting parts of ourselves we might not have seen otherwise.

So, here’s your actionable tip for the week: Dedicate a little time each day to reading, even if it’s just for ten minutes before bed. Delve into genres you’ve never explored or revisit old favourites. If you’re unsure where to start, consider jotting down emotions or experiences you’re grappling with, then seek out books that address them. And if you come across a passage that speaks to you, bookmark it. Revisiting these snippets in times of distress can be surprisingly calming.

Remember, in the vast library of life, each of us has a unique story. Sometimes, the tales of others can help us understand and appreciate our own narrative just a little bit more.

Until our next talk, have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 😃
