The Power of Outdoors (Thursday Thoughts: 31 August, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Spring is in its early stages here in the southern hemisphere, and I couldn’t be more excited even if you shook a bunch of tulips in my face. 🌷💐

Even if you’re in the northern hemisphere and are beginning to see the first signs of Autumn (aka Fall), there’s something to be said about the simple pleasures that changing seasons can bring.

Personally, I’m looking forward to not having to wear a thermal every day, while sitting nearly-on-top-of a heater, for much longer.

Isn’t it intriguing how sometimes the most uncomplicated things can have the most profound impact on our wellbeing? Spending time outdoors is a simple source of mental rejuvenation that’s been with us since time immemorial, but one that so often gets overlooked in our digital age.

There’s something inherently calming about the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, or simply feeling the sun on your face. Nature, with its unending vastness and beauty, offers a sanctuary for our minds, providing both a distraction from life’s complexities and a reminder of the world’s simple wonders.

So if you’re looking for a simple remedy to support your wellbeing, then embracing the outdoors more is a surefire way to find some inner peace… and it’s free!

So here is one simple, actionable tip for you to try this week: Commit to spending at least 20 minutes outside every day. It doesn’t have to be a rigorous hike in the peaks. Even a stroll around the block, a bit of gardening, or just sitting in a local park can be immensely therapeutic. If you can, leave your phone behind (or at least put it on silent) and immerse yourself in the present moment. Listen to the sounds, observe the colours, and let nature’s tranquil rhythm seep into your soul.

Remember, amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s the simple joys that often offer the most comfort. Nature is always out there, patiently waiting to lend an ear, soothe our minds, and remind us of the bigger picture.

Until our next talk, have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 😃
