The Beauty of Boundaries (Thursday Thoughts: 15 June, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

There are a lot of topics I write about and talk about on a frequent basis, but of all of them there is one that tends to come out on top time after time: boundaries.

So, then, no surprises for guessing what I’m going to be talking about today!

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? Over-stretched, over-committed, and over-worked, feeling like we’re always dancing to someone else’s tune. That’s usually a sign that our boundaries might need a bit of an adjustment.

Establishing boundaries isn’t about being selfish or unsociable. It’s about appreciating your worth and understanding the value of your peace of mind. Boundaries help us define what we’re comfortable with and what we’re not, acting as our personal ’no trespassing!’ sign to prevent mental and emotional exhaustion. In short, when we set and maintain boundaries we are choosing to treat ourselves with respect.

So, how do you do that? Start with simple things. For example, the next time that someone asks you for a favour that might spread you too thin, remember that it’s OK to gracefully say no. Or if you find social media taking up too much of your mental energy, allocate specific times in the day to check it, rather than feeling like you need to be ’on-call’ 24/7 (the same goes for your work email, by the way!). These little steps that add up over time and lead to enormous changes.

Boundaries might seem like walls, but they’re really bridges to a healthier, happier you.

The point is this: if you think of your mental health like a garden, then you are the gardener; it’s up to you, and you alone, to pull out any weeds that are stifling your growth!

So my question for you this week is: what do boundaries mean to you? Let me know in the comments!

Now, without any further ado… greetings and salutations, and a very warm welcome to another newsletter. I hope you enjoy my quick snapshot of my favourite things this week — hopefully at least one of them will make you smile/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week!
