Reframing Your Mindset (Thursday Thoughts: 25 May, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

I’ve found myself having something of a revelation this week, thanks to a different approach my therapist encouraged me to try that anyone can do with very little effort.

In my most recent session I was talking with her about how I’ve created more free space in my weekly schedule, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve, and yet the nagging control-freak voice in my head keeps telling me that I need to fill that time with doing X, Y and Z.

Frankly, that voice is so loud sometimes that it’s exhausting.

Which is when she said the thing that changed everything for me: “Instead of fighting it, or getting frustrated by it, why don’t you try thanking it and being grateful for it? After all, it’s the thing that has pushed you to get this far in your work.”

It’s true. I am not someone who wants to work, work, work in order to gain money or status (been there, done that, had a breakdown thanks to it!) and my top priorities in life are peace of mind and those I love. But without some kind of push, would I just find myself being a bit ‘meh’ about my work? Who can say, but thankfully that’s not the case and it’s primarily because (a) I love what I do and (b) that voice in my head keeps pushing me to grow and evolve.

The moral of the story? Sometimes, the things we think are negatives can actually be positives; like everything, it’s a matter of perspective!

So my question for you this week is: how can you be more grateful for those aspects of yourself that you may not feel great about? Let me know in the comments!

Now, without any further ado… greetings and salutations, and a very warm welcome to another newsletter. I hope you enjoy my quick snapshot of my favourite things this week — hopefully at least one of them will make you smile/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 🙂

  1. Hi Jeremy – once again your words and thoughts here resonated with me (just like when you posted about your Fridays “magically” opening up with no effort needed by you – as that exact same thing happened to me too!)…and yes I’m finding the same thing (this week will be my ‘2nd free Friday’)…last Friday that nagging voice was SO loud. I didnt give into it and go off to attack my to-do list…but wow that voice kept trying to get me to do so, so much so that I just couldnt relax into my day! These words of wisdom from your therapist, I will remember also – thank you! 🙂 Enjoy your RELAXING (haha) Friday this week, Jeremy!

    1. isn’t it funny how our minds behave with this stuff?! Glad it resonated with you again, and how handy that I could offer you advice for the following week! 🤣 Enjoy your relaxing Friday this week AND next week!!! 😂
