Thursday Thoughts: the Let’s Talk About Mental Health newsletter (11 August, 2022)

Hello Talkers!

Creating content on the internet for a living is a weird thing to do. One moment you’re having a conversation with someone on the other side of the world about an opportunity to work together, then five minutes later you’re outside sorting out the chickens and collecting their eggs. It feels so bizarre to switch my attention in the space of a few short minutes.

If you work from home then you probably know what I mean about the randomness of jumping from one focus to the next, and I’ve been making a concerted effort this week to try and keep myself focused on one type of work at a time… it’s been hit and miss, to be honest, because it’s always easy to get distracted by putting on the laundry or quickly sorting out a chore, but the more you focus the easier things become. I’m finding it helpful to block out an hour for those tasks and then, if the thought comes up that I should be doing X or Y, I add it to my task list for that hour and do it then. If you have any suggestions of how to manage the attention-switching I’d love to hear them; leave a comment/reply on this post and share your ideas!

And in other news, I’m back at it with weekly videos on YouTube (now tied into the same topic as the podcast, presented from a different angle and quicker to digest), plus my daily Life Advice That Doesn’t Suck on my @jeremygodwinofficial account over on Instagram. It’s lovely to be back at it, and I’d love to know what you think so let me know!

So without any further ado… greetings and salutations, and a very warm welcome to another newsletter. I hope you enjoy my quick snapshot of my favourite things this week — hopefully at least one of them will make you smile/feel inspired. Have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 🙂

Articles I enjoyed this week:

I decided to try something a little different this week and add in links to some articles I read and enjoyed… I tend to come across a fair bit each week while researching my episodes and so you may find some of these interesting/helpful.

VeryWell Mind ‘Does Travel Count as Therapy?’ (about the mental health benefits of travel, love this!) https://www.verywellmind.com/travel-therapy-tourism-can-benefit-people-with-mental-health-distress-5649337

NHS [UK] ‘5 steps to mental wellbeing’ (a great roundup of tips) https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/guides-tools-and-activities/five-steps-to-mental-wellbeing/

My favourite inspiring things this week:

My absolute favourite thing this week:

I loved this post (below) because peace of mind has become such a priority for me that now I find myself weighing up the cost of something before I proceed, and by cost I mean the financial cost as well as the cost to my time; if something is going to take away from my peace and calm, it’s too expensive. Takes a lot of work and still feels challenging to do that, but I’m quite happy with the results so far!

My favourite posts from my channels this week:

My favourite quote this week:

“Wherever you see a successful business, someone once made a courageous decision.”

Peter Drucker
