Why ask ‘Why?’ more often? (Thursday Thoughts: 4 April, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Have you ever found yourself doing something just because it’s what you’ve always done, not because it brings you joy or fulfilment? It’s a bit like automatically putting your left sock on first every morning without ever wondering why you don’t start with the right. It might seem trivial, but when you start to pull at that thread of ‘why?’, you unravel a whole jumper’s worth of habits, beliefs, and routines that shape your life.

Asking ‘why?’ is like the mental equivalent of turning on the light in a dark room; suddenly, you can see which furniture pieces are making you stub your toe every night. It’s about understanding the motive behind your actions, feelings, and thoughts. This simple question can be a powerful tool in your mental health toolkit, helping you to uncover, reassess, and realign your actions with your true values and desires.

So here’s my tip of the week: Start with something small. Pick a routine or habit you do daily and ask yourself, ‘Why do I do this?’ Is it because it genuinely benefits you, or is it just a habit without purpose? This exercise can be both amusing and illuminating. You might find out that the reason you always eat a biscuit with your tea is that it reminds you of cosy afternoons with your grandparents, not just because you fancy a nibble. Slowly expanding this practice to bigger aspects of your life can lead to profound insights and changes. It’s about questioning the path you’re on and making sure it’s where you want to be, not just where you’ve ended up by following one left sock after another.

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃
