It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃
I am slightly amazed to be telling you this random fact about myself today: I have not had a single cup of coffee in over three months.
Now, anyone who knows me will tell you that I operated on pure coffee for many years and I took my daily caffeine consumption seriously: at least three coffees a day, always black and no sugar and made using a proper espresso machine with freshly ground beans.
But, in December 2023, my partner and I became extremely ill with a stomach flu (I’ll spare you the details) and we couldn’t eat for days, let alone drink anything other than water. Once we started to recover, the idea of drinking coffee just made us both feel ill (given that neither of us had any desire to feel the level of dehydration we had just experienced for the better part of a week) so we switched our morning beverages from coffee to fresh juice… and, three months later, neither of us has gone back.
I’ve been drinking coffee daily since I was 14, and I’m now a bit older than that (lol!), and frankly I don’t think I ever seriously considered myself capable of giving up coffee… so it’s been quite the surprise, and a pleasant reminder that we can all change if and when we want to. Will I stay off the stuff? No idea. But since we’re only just beginning to head into Autumn here, after a long and hot summer where the idea of hot beverages has been repulsive to say the least, only time will tell what happens when the weather gets cooler. However, the point is that I did it and I am pleasantly surprised by myself. Which is a nice place to be in.
So here’s my tip of the week: Think about where you may have the opportunity to surprise yourself in some way, by making a change (no matter how small) to something you do which you thought was just a given.
Until our next talk,
Jeremy 😃
