Feeling ‘on-edge’? (Thursday Thoughts: 14 March, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Have you ever had one of those days (or weeks) where you feel a bit like you’re walking a tightrope emotionally — just one nudge away from either exploding or crumbling (or both, at the same time)?

It’s a peculiar sensation, isn’t it? It’s almost as if your mental equilibrium has decided to go on a spontaneous holiday without giving you any notice, and let’s face it… it doesn’t feel great. Well, you’re not alone in this. We all find ourselves wobbling precariously on the edge from time to time, wondering how to regain our balance without causing a total disaster.

Now, imagine if our minds had their own little set of stabilisers, like the training wheels you had on your first bike. Wouldn’t that be brilliant? While I’m still working on the patent for that invention (boo!), I do have a handy tip that might just do the trick in the meantime (yay!). It’s something I like to call the ‘Mental Reset Button’. No, it’s not a fancy gadget or a magical potion, but it’s equally as enchanting. Ready for it?

The Mental Reset Button is as simple as allocating a ‘worry hour’ – a dedicated time in your day (preferably not too close to bedtime) where you allow yourself to acknowledge and ponder over your worries. Write them down, talk them out with a rubber duck (they’re great listeners), or even dance them out if that’s your style (#ThrowingShapesNotTantrums). Once your hour is up, gently remind yourself that it’s time to pack those worries away and focus on the present. It’s about giving yourself permission to worry, but within boundaries, so it doesn’t overrun your day. Outside of your worry time, write down any concerns you have and resolve to consider them at the allocated time.

Incorporating this little routine can be surprisingly liberating. It’s like telling your worries, “You’ve got an appointment, so no jumping the queue!” This way, you’re taking control back, one worry at a time, and keeping your mental balance steady so you can make it across that tightrope.

So here’s my tip of the week: Try the Mental Reset Button technique and allocate some ‘Worry Time’ for the next few weeks. If it helps, keep some notes for yourself to track how you feel and how effective the experiment has been for you.

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃
