Who Are You? (Thursday Thoughts: 18 January, 2024)

It’s time for another weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything noteworthy that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Now that 2024 is well and truly here, it’s that time of year that many of us are making changes to our routine in line with what we want to achieve in the new year. However, I think there are two far more important questions to consider:

Who are you?

And, who do you want to be?

It’s kind-of like the adult equivalent of “What do you want to be when you grow up?” but with a bigger focus on how you feel within and a lot less judgement from Aunt Susan.

This is an exercise I do at least once or twice a year, sometimes starting with an extra question (‘Who don’t I want to be?’) as a starting point. This helps me to think about what I’m doing, or not doing, and how that aligns with the person I want to be; if I’m off-track or out of alignment, I can then make choices about how I get myself back on-track. It’s simple, yet it’s effective… and, quite frankly, I don’t think we need to overcomplicate this stuff too much.

Last week in the podcast I talked about finding meaning in life, and I’m reminded of this quote:

“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.”

Roberty Byrne

So here’s my tip of the week: make time to reflect on who you are, and who you want to be. Do this objectively, without judgement, and consider what matters most to you. If you feel stuck, start with who you don’t want to be and then proceed to the other questions from there. Whatever you come up with, identify one or two small steps you can start taking over this next week to start moving forward towards your goals.

Remember, your life is yours to shape as you see fit… so shape it into something that brings you satisfaction and meaning!

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃

  1. I completely understand the term ” feeling stuck “.  If we just had the courage to break free from what is EXPECTED of us (and fear of real change ) and to find real freedom without feeling selfish and guilty…..what a wonderful world it would be.    I can see that in my mind.  I literally have one thing that stops me from being able to grasp it and I call it “husband”   But, I cannot blame him,  and I won’t.   I just need to figure out how to uncreate the monster that I created 37 years ago when it was cute.   It’s called ” taking care of my own mental health “.
