Why should you daydream more? (Thursday Thoughts: 9 November, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Have you ever caught yourself staring out of the window, lost in thought, and then hastily snapped back to ‘reality’, feeling a bit guilty? Today, let’s talk about a seriously underrated mental escape hatch: the humble act of daydreaming. Yes, in our productivity-obsessed world, it’s almost rebellious to suggest that letting your mind wander is a good thing… but hear me out!

Daydreaming isn’t just your mind taking a holiday; it’s a mini-vacation for your soul. It allows your brain to sift through thoughts and feelings, explore new ideas, and even problem-solve in a stress-free environment. Far from being a ‘waste of time,’ these meandering mind moments can actually be a form of self-care, providing a much-needed break from the constant noise and demands of everyday life.

So here is one simple and actionable tip for the week: Allow yourself a few five-minute ‘daydream breaks’ over the next seven days. Put your phone on silent, find a comfy chair, and just let your mind roam. There’s no right or wrong here; this time is for you. When you’re done, jot down any interesting thoughts or ideas that popped up. You might be surprised at the insights that emerge when you give yourself permission to drift away.

Remember, your mind needs downtime just as much as your body does. A few moments of daydreaming might just be the tonic you didn’t know you needed!

Until our next talk,

Jeremy 😃
