Hobbies: The Unsung Heroes of Mental Wellbeing (Thursday Thoughts: 12 October, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Have you ever found solace in the rhythm of a paintbrush against canvas, or the thrill of perfecting a new recipe, or the satisfaction of mastering a musical note?

It’s time we sing the praises of hobbies, those delightful diversions that often play a background role in our lives but which actually have an enormous and profound impact on our mental health and general wellbeing.

Hobbies, in all their varied forms, aren’t just pastimes. They’re sanctuaries. Little pockets of the world where time seems to pause, and we’re allowed to be completely immersed, finding simple joy in the process and detaching ourselves from the day-to-day worries and distractions of life. Whether it’s gardening, photography, cooking, or even bird-watching, these activities offer a beautiful blend of focus and freedom, allowing our minds to both engage and relax.

So, here’s my simple mental health tip of the week: Revisit an old hobby or pick up a new one. Dedicate a bit of time each week to this pursuit. And, while you’re at it, don’t forget that it’s not about perfection, but passion. Relish the process, the learning curves, the tiny victories, and even the amusing blunders.

Remember: in our relentless pursuit of big achievements, it’s these small, passionate engagements that often sprinkle the most joy in our lives. So, dust off that old guitar, pick up those dancing shoes, or simply indulge in the art of doing something for the sheer love of it.

Until our next talk, have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 😃

P.S. You’re going to be seeing some changes in the way I structure podcast titles; in fact, I’ve already been trialling a new structure for a couple of days on episodes 195-200. Instead of being something like ‘Let’s Talk About… Making Progress’ you’ll see it as ‘200: Making progress in life for better mental health’ or similar. This makes it much easier for listeners new and old to quickly see what the topic is, and it will make searching for episodes easier.
