Do you dare to detox? (Thursday Thoughts: 14 September, 2023)

It’s time for my weekly round-up of tips for better mental health! Each week I share a handful of things I’ve come across that I find interesting, intriguing and inspirational, plus I tell you about anything interesting that’s coming up on my weekly podcast, Let’s Talk About Mental Health, or just generally in terms of my work. So… let’s talk!

Hello Talkers! 👋🗣😃

Ever feel like your mind’s buzzing with countless notifications, even when your phone’s on silent? 🫨📱😵‍💫

In today’s digital age, it’s not just our devices that need charging – our minds do too. The constant influx of information can sometimes be at times a helpful thing… but it can also just add more unnecessary noise into our lives, and it can act as a barrier to our inner peace. This week, let’s chat about the art and science of making space for a mini ‘digital detox’ more often.

Now, I’m not suggesting we toss our gadgets out the window… these tools, after all, keep us connected in a myriad of wonderful ways, and if you come for my iPad I will probably growl at you.

But, occasionally, a little break from the screen can do wonders for our mental clarity and overall well-being.

It gives our minds the space to breathe, think, and reflect without the unending pings and pop-ups.

So, are you ready for this week’s practical tip? Designate an hour each day – let’s call it your ‘Golden Hour’ – where you’re completely offline. No emails, no social media, no news. Instead, read a book, go for a walk, or simply sit and let your mind wander. If an hour feels too long, start with 15 minutes and work your way up. You might just be surprised at the serenity this simple act can usher in.

Remember, while the digital world offers us a universe of information and connection at our fingertips, sometimes the most profound insights come in moments of silence. So, let’s hit that mental ‘pause’ button more often and grant our minds the respite they deserve.

Until our next talk, have a fantastic week!

Jeremy 😃

  1. This is Andrea. When I feel the need to simplify and to get garbage out of my life ….my phone is the one thing that has control over my need to be more in the present in my personal life. I struggle with laying it down .

    1. Phones are so addictive aren’t they? Like little portable dopamine devices. I find it helpful to put it in another room for an hour or to switch it onto flight mode to limit my access if I need to focus. I also have notifications switched off for most things, makes a huge difference 🙂
